Let me be Honest
I love Holy Thursday…maybe the fact that it surrounds a meal, as a proud Italian and happily married man/father, speaks to me.
Often, on this day, as we watch the priest wash the feet of others, we lift up their commitment and vocation to be like Christ. This is critical for us all.
I wonder, at the same time, if in addition to this Holy Thursday ritual, we might begin to better call all others to do the same.
While the priestly call is unique and remains revered, we must better appreciate how we all, women, men, laity- better symbolically wash the feet of those who betray, misunderstand, and underestimate the love of God.
Yes, the priestly sacrament is established this day.
But so is it vocational call to wash the feet of others, to accept God’s will despite our fears, and to be in communion with others.
May we, with an inclusive heart, accept who God call us to be…even if it lead us to sacrifice and an entrance into the unknown.
