Open My Eyes

“Be with me God.”

In the recent past, when encountering a difficult situation or experience, I would say this silent prayer.

However, my evolving spirituality has invited me to say a different prayer: “God, help me remember that you are with me.”

This distinction is important as it changes how we see God. The first prayer misses the point as God is always with us. It is us who fail to recognize God’s presence within our soul and in others.

God is not a genie that is at our beck and call. Rather, God is always with us, within us, guiding us into a life fueled by love.

So as you and I encounter future challenges, let our prayer recall the real presence of our  loving creator who is always with us and within our neighbors.
