INSPIRING TUNES: Salvation Works

This series of posts titled “Inspiring Tunes,”  highlights inspirational songs that provide a valuable message worth further reflection and consideration. Enjoy!

There is no shortage of thoughtful, inspiring songs by Jennifer Nettles, both as a solo artist and as a member of the hit-making duo  Sugarland with Kristin Bush.

This 2016 single offers an attempt at the answer to the question of how salvation works.

The God in this interpretation is not one of fire and brimstone. Rather, it is a God that loves us unconditionally, a God just waiting for us to recognize that love.

A key lyric in this song is: “Every sinner has a future and every saint has a past.”

This lyric is powerful, humbling, and inspiring. It is also true.

The lives of those that history remembers as “saints” were not perfect. At some point in their life, they accepted God’s love for them. They turned those conversion moments in their earthly journey as opportunities to know God and to bring God to others.

I also love the lyric: “But I believe that God loves us more than we deserve.”

This view of God is inclusive, it loves as an unconditional creator. God, despite our shortcomings, our errors, and wounds, loves us more than we could ever know.

The challenge is to truly believe this. Like a teenager when they first fall in love, we should be elated with joy in knowing that God loves us not for what we do but for who we are- and this is as God’s beloved.
