Sometimes, the suffering of the world, in addition to our own crosses, can be a bit overwhelming.
When we feel the pain of others, it can lead to feelings of helplessness. Too often, we move on with our lives and fail to take advantage of the spiritual invitation to change someone’s world for the better.
When St Vincent de Paul was overwhelmed with grief and confusion after an experience with a dying servant, his friend offered the following challenge in this question: “what must be done?”
We, too, are presented with this question.
What can you do, what can we do, to respond to the injustice and pain of this world?
The answer may be different for all of us, as we possess different gifts and talents.
As long as we pay attention to the question, in response to the needs of others, especially those on the margins, we can move from helplessness to living a life of service and reflecting God’s love.
